What's that Sound? Is your computer making a ticking sound right now? (If not, click here) Here's what it represents: Every time you hear a tick, it means there's another human passenger on the planet. That's in spite of HIV and AIDS ... and wars and famines ... and diseases. This is not the birth rate -- births are happening a lot faster than this! What you are hearing is the "Net Gain": births minus deaths. This is how fast people are being added to the population of the planet.
In many parts of the world where this population growth is the fastest they are not able to add food, fuel, hospitals, schools, doctors, teachers and other social infrastructure fast enough to keep up! So, as population continues to rise rapidly, they are falling further and further behind. Every minute we are adding 140 more people to the world, over 200,000 more every day, over 70 million more every year! This is not sustainable. Two thousand years ago it took about four and a half minutes to add another person to the population of the world, net gain. Now we are adding 630 people in that same span of four and a half minutes! This is not sustainable. The sooner we humanely stop the increase, the better for everyone on the planet. |
